Reykjavik Iceland Museums Shopping Dining

iceland night view

Imagine walking over charcoal black volcanic stone with miles of untouched landscape in front of you, while hand-in-hand with your sweetheart. Imagine gazing at the sky and seeing mass lights dance across the horizon in a rainbow of colors, then stealing a quick nose kiss. Nothing short of magical, this place really does exist. Welcome to one of the most unique landscapes on earth. Welcome to Iceland.

Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is home to just 120,000 people and is a great combination of modern metropolitan city and a quaint seaside village. Explore the best shopping, restaurants, nightlife and entertainment. Or enjoy quiet strolls through the cobblestone streets admiring the historic buildings, boutiques and cafes, while embracing the strong contrasts that make up this city. With all it has to offer, a trip to Iceland can be just about anything you want it to be.
TO DO:
The Blue Lagoon
Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland is one of the most widely visited attractions, and with good reason. Breathtaking views of frosty blue waters, attentive service and luxurious amenities make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Located in the youngest lava field in Iceland, the steamy waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulphur and have not only a documented healing effect on skin diseases, but cast a serene calm over you as you are part of nature in its purest form.

Once you arrive at the spa, I suggest booking the exclusive lounge for the ultimate experience. The private lounge area is outfitted with a cozy fireplace, lounge chairs, magazines and a fully stocked bar of teas, water, fruit, sparkling wine and more. Upstairs in the private showers, sample the Blue Lagoon bath products, plush robes, slippers and towels. If there is anything you may need, a butler is just a phone call away.

As you leave through your private exit, swim in the perfectly temperatured waters, rub the silica mud over your body, and explore the caves. When ready, head over to the massage area for an in-water treatment by a master masseuse. Afterward, float up to the swim up bar for a libation of wine or an electric blue cocktail.
blue lava restaurant

For a bite to eat at the lagoon, check out one of the many restaurants. Lava Restaurant is built right into a lava cliff with views of the lagoon that you are welcome to appreciate in the comfort of your robe. Have a glass of wine, fresh seafood, and sample Icelandic Skyr (a type of dairy product similar to yogurt) for a light and refreshing dessert.

If you spend the day here, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights at night, whether on the roof deck or from the warm waters if it is a cool and crisp evening (especially September through April). (Photos courtesy of Blue Lagoon)

Harpa
Harpa - Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Center

Back in the city, much is to be explored in the artistic city of Reykjavik. Performing arts is a staple here, and one of the most stunning buildings you will ever see is the geometric Harpa - Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Center. Festivals such as Sonar Reykjavik (February), Reykjavik Fashion Festival (March) and Iceland Airwaves (November) have made Iceland a worldwide go-to music destination.
Harpa - Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Center

Opened officially in May 2011, this work of art is the home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Opera. It was selected by Gramophone magazine, an authority on classical music, as one of ten best concert halls of the new millennium; it is also one of the greenest. Situated on the Reykjavik harbor, the four main halls all represent one of the four elements: water, air, fire and earth. See a concert if timing is right, or just grab a specialty cocktail from the flagship restaurant, Kolabrautin. (Photos courtesy of Harpa)

Museums
Reykjavik Art Museum exhibit

Iceland will not disappoint art and history buffs, with around 150 different museums. There's one dedicated to Noble-prize winning author Halldór Laxness; another constructed over the site of an ancient Viking longhouse; and one more on the history of the fishing industry. Of the most famous is the Reykjavik Art Museum with the largest art collection in Iceland. In over 32,000 square feet of gallery space, over 20 exhibitions run every year, covering a wide range—from the museum's collections to contemporary art installations. A full range of events, festivals and tours are also available here. (Photo courtesy of Reykjavik Art Museum)

Shop
kraum iceland

Iceland has it's very own style and charm, and luxury goods are often cheaper in Iceland due to a favorable exchange rate and tax back deal for visitors. Known for its wool products, creative designs and delectable sweets, you can find something for everyone.

Kraum is one of the most interesting stores in Reykjavik. Located in one of the oldest houses in Iceland (dating back to the 17th century), it is the first store in the country dedicated only to Icelandic designers. Over 200 designers are featured with everything from clothing, jewelry, accessories, furniture, books and home goods. (Photo courtesy of Kraum)

Outdoor Adventures

Outside of the city in the summer months, play and explore Iceland with your significant other by enjoying the great outdoors. Try your hand in rafting, fishing, diving, snorkeling, hiking, climbing, or jeep safaris. In the winter months, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and dog sledding are prime. If you want to see rugged Iceland by car and guide, make sure to enlist Luxury Adventures. Your choice of tour and form of transportation can be personally selected to meet any thrill-seekers expectations. (Photo courtesy of Luxury Adventures)

Eat
Geysir Bistro iceland interior

Icelandic food is made with the cleanest, freshest ingredients and relies heavily on seafood, fresh vegetables and meats. Icelanders must also have a sweet tooth, with all of their local treats, chocolates and dairy products. Focus is on local ingredients, and you will see the use of salmon, trout, seabirds, blueberries, wild mushrooms and cheese used heavily. Try out a local delicacy, Minke Whale, served in many ways—one of the most popular is as a sashimi—with a shot of ginger tea on the side at The Lobster; or go more casual with a whale burger complemented by a side of lobster mayonnaise from Geysir Bistro. Sleep
Reykjavik Marina Hotel lobby

In true Icelandic style, Reykjavik Marina Hotel features modern décor, clean lines and is in total sync with nature. The newest hotel in the Icelandic Air Hotels, its 109 rooms are all outfitted with cool, quirky and colorful decorations that are functional and minimalistic. Located in the heart of the harbor district, the striking views of the Reykjavik Harbor brings you up close and personal with the port and vessels...so close you can touch them. In the lobby you can lounge and relax by the fireplace, or admire the sculptures by local artists.
Reykjavik Marina Hotel Slippbarinn

Popular restaurant Slippbarinn, has a wide array of small bites meant to share, such as the charcuterie, calamari and winter salad. The bar is a hotspot on the weekends and drinks are just as creative as the décor with libations like “Amazing Almonds” (brandy, almond, egg, cream, cinnamon) and “Jesus Pain Killer”

Sri Panwa reminds me of Angelina Jolie in the sense that she’s gorgeous

Sri Panwavillas
Sri Panwa reminds me of Angelina Jolie in the sense that she’s gorgeous from every angle, so it's virtually impossible to take a bad picture of her. Because of that, it’s hardly surprising that just one of the property’s many awards is 'Hotel with the Best View in the World' from Beach Tomato. Before I tell you why I was so completely enamored with this family-owned hotel, however, let’s get the cons out of the way.

First of all, the breakfast pastries were not buttery enough for my taste. This actually turned into a good thing though, since it left more room to fill up on the scrumptious local treats. There is no second of all; I can honestly say that everything else was sheer perfection. After the first day, I emailed my niece and told her that she needed to alter her upcoming Bali honeymoon plans and come here instead. Three photos later and she was sold.

Why do I love Sri Panwa so much? Here are just a few of the hundred reasons:

Sri Panwa villa outdoor bath
1. Location, Location, Location

Phuket is a large island in the Andaman Sea (roughly an hour’s flight from Bangkok) and makes an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding islands and their beaches. Many parts of this beautiful and deservedly popular island, such as Patong, have turned into year-round spring break spots—noisy, dirty and overcrowded, with lots of drinking and endless partying. If you’re looking for a luxurious, secluded island retreat though, the hilly coastal property of Sri Panwa includes both a villa-style hotel and private residences—definitely a more relaxing choice. Located in the South Eastern-most tip of Phuket, perched high above Cape Panwa and surrounded by a 40-acre rainforest, it doesn’t get much more private than this.
Sri Panwa villa view

                                                 2. Luxury Accommodations

The 52 villas were designed like glass jewel boxes, offering breathtaking views from a comfy bed, oversized jet-stream Jacuzzi bath, the kitchen, and just about everywhere. The villas are divided into two sides, one for living and dining, the other for sleeping. The handcrafted décor and setup made everything feel very homey, but minimalistic. The designer wisely chose to keep it clean and contemporary, allowing the natural backdrop to remain the focal point of the property. Enjoy a skinny-dip under the stars with your own private infinity swimming pool, or utilize the rain shower and sunset pavilion. The pavilion’s sofa bed is perfect for enjoying the background music from the state-of-the-art entertainment system (the owner’s son has incredible taste in music and put together some fabulous, eclectic mix-tapes) while taking in the sunset.

Other hospitable, complimentary touches include high-speed wireless Internet access, a mini-bar stocked with beer, soda, snacks, a selection of fresh fruits and even a freezer full of fruit popsicles. The villas are also equipped with a personal espresso machine with a variety of exotic teas and coffees for your morning pick-me-up.
Sri Panwa pool club

                                                     3. Food & Drink

There’s no better way to start the day than with a full buffet breakfast at the indoor/outdoor Baba Poolclub, which sprawls out over 54,000 square feet, and features a 82-foot infinity-edge lap pool. Other Baba delights include the Baba Pool Bar, BabaQ, Baba Cooking School, a Game Room, Yaya Boutique, and if you’re in the mood to party, the Baba88 Disco. The club has a great reputation for their ever-changing roster of international DJs. The Poolclub however, is where most people can be found if they choose to venture away from their private lair. The adorable wait staff dress in Ralph Lauren-esque Bermudas and tennis shirts and could not have been more attentive.
Sri Panwa baba nest

Breakfast started once I snagged my favorite table complete with rocking chairs, and checked off my preference boxes on the made-to-order menu. Breakfast consisted of a cappuccino followed occasionally by Eggs Benedict with Parma ham and bok choy, and always accompanied by a cup of the fresh coconut yogurt. I forgot one morning that I had special ordered the assorted dim sum plate 24 hours in advance, so the next morning I had two breakfasts. A stroll down the buffet line showcases an assortment of fresh juices, tropical fruit, cereal, the afore-mentioned not-buttery-enough pastries, and usually around eight changing Thai hot dishes with at least four different curries. I became addicted to my morning crab in green curry over rice noodles...yum!
Sri Panwa baba nest

Take a short walk (or chauffeur-driven tuk-tuk, similar to a golfcart) down the steep hill to enjoy a tasty Thai dinner at Baba Soul Food. Or head up the hill (burns as many calories as about 20 minutes on the Stairmaster) in time for panoramic sunset views while sipping cocktails at the Baba Nest. I kept thinking it would have made a perfect closing shot for the old TV show, Robin Leach’s Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

                                                     4. Luxury Spa

Although I gave serious thought to working off some of that double breakfast with a workout at the fitness center, a game of tennis, or at the very least a yoga class, I opted for some indulgent pampering instead. I must say, I don’t regret that decision. I was greeted by my lovely therapist, Lee, who handed me a cup of chrysanthemum tea and had me do a sniff test to choose from six fragrant massage oils. I was then led past gorgeous lily pad ponds and Zen-sounding waterfalls to my private room, where for the next 90 minutes I gratefully succumbed to Lee’s intuitive hands of velvet/steel. Next time I’m going all out for the decadent sounding Moët & Chandon treatment that invites you to soak in a rose petal and champagne bubble bath while drinking a bottle of Moët. Nothing wrong with that picture.

                                                     5. Superior Service

Want a complete Travel Quote including airfare, special hotel rates and FREE upgrades? Contact our Travel Specialist today! The service was a perfect blend of warm Thai hospitality and European professionalism. The first morning at breakfast, my server asked how I slept.
I said most peacefully, except when I was awakened by a strange scratching noise, which upon further investigation turned out to be stray tree branch scratching against my window whenever the wind blew. When I returned to my villa, the offending branch had already been cut back. I just want to give everyone full warning: Since I left last week, I’ve started a special savings account, because I’m calling dibs on the last five-bedroom villa residence. Priced at a cool million dollars, I should be moving in around 2023.

Top 10 New Zealand Beaches to Visit in New Zealand

  Top 10 New Zealand Beaches to Visit in New Zealand

* Karekare Beach (West Auckland)
* Ninety Mile Beach (Cape Reinga)
* Hot Water Beach (Coromandel)
* Gillespies Beach (West Coast)
* Manu Bay (Raglan)
* Wainui Beach (Gisborne)
* Allans Beach (Dunedin)
* Mosquito Bay (Abel Tasman)
* New Chums Beach (Coromandel)
* Koekohe Beach (North Otago)

Karekare has been named among New Zealand’s best beaches by an American publication focused on the outdoors.
The West Auckland beach was named by Outside magazine as one of the country’s top 10 beaches, along with Ninety Mile Beach in the Far North, Hot Water Beach in Coromandel and Mosquito Bay on the Abel Tasman coastal walk.
karekare beach
Described as the beach made famous by the 1993 film The Piano, the magazine said Karekare “is a vast, still-empty paradise of black sand and craggy cliffs that loom over the Tasman Sea”.
“Bush-clad green hills rife with native manuka, cabbage trees, and myriad ferns backdrop the sand, and the 100-foot [30m] Karekare Falls is tucked just inside the forest.”
Seal spotting and “braving the churning surf for a wild swim” were among the activities visitors could do there, it said.
Absent from the list are Mt Maunganui and Piha.
karekare beach image
Four beaches on the list are in the South Island, including Koekohe Beach near Moeraki, in North Otago, and Gillespies Beach, near Hokitika.
Adam Roscoe, 20, whose parents run the Karekare Beach Lodge, said he wasn’t surprised that his local beach had made the list.
“Piha may be more popular but Karekare can offer something that’s a little more private, and yet it’s still so close to town.”
Mr Roscoe said his parents got some business from tourists who had watched The Piano, and one American couple had returned every year.
Karekare Beach New Zealand
“They just like seeing the sun set into the ocean from our place in the summer, and that it’s less built up than the other beaches on the same coast,” he said.
“It offers privacy, exclusion but if you want to get out into town to socialise you can as well.”
Massey University marketing lecturer Associate Professor Henry Chung said The Piano had done for Karekare Beach tourism what The Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand.
“I believe it has been ranked a top New Zealand beach because a Hollywood movie has brought the beach to international attention,” he said.
Karekar Beach New Zealand1
“It’s opened up an exciting marketing opportunity for New Zealand, and especially the North Island.”
Dr Chung said that with a circulation of nearly 690,000, Outside magazine gave a “new tourism perspective” of New Zealand to an international audience.
“Traditionally we have used sheep, farms and mountains to promote New Zealand,” he said.
“But now we have a magazine that says hey, there are great beaches there too.”
Dr Chung said beach holidays were popular among European and North American tourists.
